Sedation for digestive endoscopies
Sedation for digestive endoscopies
The upper digestive endoscopy is the method of examining the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, using a flexible tube without disturbing breathing.
The colonoscopy is a procedure of internal investigation of the colon during which the patient can indicate sensations such as cramps, bloating, pressure.
How and in what way is sedation done?
Sedation involves the intravenous injection of drugs that induce sleep similar to natural sleep. The role of sedation is to reduce the sensations caused by endoscopic maneuvers and to better withstand the maneuver. The effect of these drugs starts taking place about 45-60 seconds from the time of administration of the substances.
How long does the sedation process take?
The anesthetist is responsible for administering the sedative-hypnotic drug in such a way that the sleep persists throughout the operation, and shortly after its completion, (4-5 min.), the patient wakes up.
What diet can the patient follow after sedation?
It is advisable to consume clear liquids (water, tea, soup) often and in small amounts about an hour after the procedure. After 2-3 hours the patient can consume solid and semi-solid foods according to the prescription of the gastroenterologist. Adverse reactions such as nausea and vomiting are extremely rare.
How long after sedation can the patient return to normal activities?
After waking up, the patient remains under medical supervision for about 25-30 minutes, the time required for full return. Although the substances used do not cause residual drowsiness, the intervention on the central nervous system can alter concentration and reflexes until the end of the day. It is recommended that the patient is accompanied and does not drive. Additionally, making decisions and signing important documents after sedation should be avoided.
Who can be sedated?
Sedation can be used on all patients, even those with multiple pathologies associated, with the condition that they are well investigated and controlled.
Are there any contraindications for sedation?
